Riviera Maya Golf Club - Championship Course
About
Riviera Maya Golf Club has been ranked as one of the top five golf courses in Mexico. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the Championship Course winds through lush Mayan jungle. Natural lakes also dot the scenic landscape. Being so close to the ocean, wind definitely comes into play, especially on the tough par-3 second hole, which plays directly into the prevailing winds. If you are able to keep your shots in the fairway, you'll surely be rewarded with a good lie and a challenging, but fair approach. Jones carefully carved the golf course from the deepest part of a limestone quarry, spreading the fairways across treacherous jungle growth that is just waiting to swallow up errant shots. In addition to the championship layout, there is also an Executive Course that is one of the best nine-hole golf courses in the Rivera Maya.

Great course. Great shape and scenery.
Carts junk - no brakes, no range balls. Had fetch them myself. No gos. No problem. I would play again. Beautiful golf course Great sand , greens , and fairways.
Challenging, excellent condition
Fairways and greens are very good. Many holes are fairly tight so lots of opportunities to lose balls in the jungle or water. Nicely designed - signature hole must be the one that incorporates a cenote by the green. Carts are mixed: some are old and my new one ran out of juice with 2 holes to go.
There are Better Options in Riviera Maya
I've played 4 courses in the area between Cancun and Tulum in the last 12 months and overall this was the LEAST IMPRESSIVE as far as the price, service, and course conditions. To begin, they advertise free range balls with tee times but the range was empty with no balls and no staff when I played. The course was wet and your balls and clubs were constantly covered in mud/sand, yet there were NO TOWELS provided at tee off (7:10 AM) and when making the turn 2 hours later still no towels . UNACCEPTABLE for a course that is $180 USD for a round. The greens were smooth and well kept however they were obnoxiously slow considering this is a "championship" course in Mexico and not my local muni in Northeast Ohio. The parking brake worked fine in my cart (others mention issues with this) however there was no GPS, no signage on the course and nothing on the scorecard to show distances and hole layouts. Again, not something I find consistent with a course at $180 USD for a round. When I travel with my golf bag I do not bring my expensive/fragile GPS and rangefinder equipment.
I regret to say I wouldn't recommend this course and your money is better spent at Mayakoba or Gran Coyote which are less than 30 minutes from here.
Beautiful course
I would recommend this course to anyone! It is absolutely beautiful, some road noise from the highway, but nothing to bad , services are truly lacking, no guidance from staff so check in and getting our clubs to the carts was an issue , no starters nor Marshall’s and no towels on the cart.
None of those thing would deter me from going again one of the nicest courses I’ve golfed !!! An absolute MUST !
Enjoyable
The coarse was challenging with risk and reward. Just need to play a second time to take advantage of them.
The cart had no park brake but that was a minor inconvenience as I needed to park up against something. Not a big deal as the coarse was relatively flat.
It had some tremendous views from the old quarry rocks.
I would play a second time and recommend anyone too.
Great course
Throughly enjoyed my round. Staff was nice. Cart was in great condition, unlike previous posts of this being an issue. Range balls were eh, but practice facilities were top notch.
Just go!
The fairways are a dream … very well manicured course … best in that region!
DO NOT RENT CLUBS
I played this beautiful course. I rented clubs as I had none. First swing with a 7 iron the head goes flying. It was a well struck golf shot, upon inspection the inside of the shaft had rust inside of it. These rentals get used all the time. They charged me $125.00 to re shaft the club. Should cost 40-50 $. They REFUSED to find the manager so I could speak with him. Their own rental
Agreement says “ player will be held liable for damages IN EXCESS of normal wear and tear.” I find it very annoying that a PGA course shows this poor level of customer service. After spending $400.00 to play a round, I get shafted because I am the gringo. The course is fantastic, be the costumer service is TERRIBLE.
Not worth the money
The course is very pretty but that’s all it has going for it. Zero service on the course. Everyone playing there is traveling and renting, yet they didn’t have golf balls to buy at the pro shop. The club rental was not in great shape, there were no towels so you are playing with dirty clubs, no ball cleaners—all the basics you expect from a normal course, let alone a “PGA” course. Would be fine if they charged $50 for the round but for $200 with rentals in Mexico, you should be getting much more.
Great experience
This is a spectacular course with a very challenging layout
If you are not a straight shooter bring enough balls. The golf carts Do not have distance indicators and club cleaning equipment
But I bring always my own equipment anyway
Some reviews here are very negative which I do not understand. For a real golfer the layout and the condition of the course are the most important and they are wonderful
Played the course about seven times and never got tired of it
Thomas from Switzerland
Bad administration
They did not respect the reservation that we do it through the app telling us that we shouldn’t call to confirm the time we never get any type of message confirming that also they charge us for rental but didn’t have any or golf carsand were in very bad shape
No clubs, no problem
Traveling to mexico presented us with some problems as far as traveling with our golf clubs was concerned, however they had very reasonably priced rentals from a major brand on offer (Taylormade.) We played in late December, and the conditions were absolutely perfect. Mid-70s, very slight breeze, not a cloud in the sky. Cant recommend the course enough, lots of fun, challenging, and scenic holes to keep your attention, and to top it all off the staff was very helpful and friendly. One of the best traveling golf experiences I've ever had, and I've played around in the states a fair amount.
Don’t even bother with them
If you’re a fan of zero service and a we don’t give a …culture then this club’s for you. Spend your money elsewhere
Should had been informed that it was a par 3 course
Travel guru
Wow, is the first word coming out of my mouth, the first hole starts off with a super tight drive and continues and never lets up, either water, sand or jungle on each sides of the fairways, then cenotes (deep water holes), rock cliffs, palm trees double breaking fairways, crowned greens and par 3's in excess of 250yds with water hazard from T to green. This is a great course, forget the lousy carts, mediocre balls on the range, what matters is this amazing course. From the tips it will be the hardest challenge for any golfers, I am a 4 handicap , kept it straight and still shot a 10 over. Staff is great, club house amazing and the best snack bar with amazing food.
Good course convenient to Barcelo Resort
Guest Services at the Barcelo Rivera Maya booked my tee times for two days last week. I had no idea about the course but with the hotel handling transportation, I was in. The price is about average for non Mayakoba courses in the area. Layout was challenging with no way to find "jungle balls" but the fairways were lush, greens well-grassed - if a little slow but typical for resorts. The carts are in sad shape - check and makes sure your parking brake works. All in all, being about a 15 minute ride, it was worth it.
Are we talking about the staff, greens keepers? How were the course conditions?
